Schedule

January 6th 9-7:45 pm CST

(in Central Time)

9-10 am Forum: Introduction, Welcome and Teacher's Roundtable-Hosted by Ashley Ernst

10:05-11:05 am Workshop 1: Molly McCormack: You’ve Got a Right to Sing the Blues!

All Levels of Singers and Mountain Dulcimer Players: We’ll take some easy familiar upbeat songs like “Skip to My Lou”, “Hard Times” and “You are My Sunshine” and inject them with some blues by changing a few notes, chords and strumming pattern.

11:15-12:15 Workshop 2: Butch Ross: The Red Right Hand

The Blues is a feeling. It comes from your heart, from your soul, and to a large degree, your butt. Come learn how to internalize rhythm, how to groove, how to swing, how to shuffle. Learn why a pocket is more than just where you keep your keys. Learn how to make your head bob involuntarily, and more importantly, how to make it happen to others.

12:30-1:30 pm Workshop 3: Steve Eulberg: The "Save Your Bacon" Scale

The Pentatonic Minor Scale has saved my bacon SO many times, because it magically works with ALL the I - IV - V chords in a blues progression.  You only need ONE scale with all those chords, AND (here's the secret: It's only (1) count-it, ONE note away from the Blues Scale.) Here's the kicker, on a dulcimer tuned 1-5-8 or D-A-d, there are SEVERAL places to play Pentatonic Minor Scales, ALL the time.

Lunch / Student Sharing / Open Mic / Optional Break Out Rooms

2:30- 3:30 pm Workshop 4:  Lil' Rev: Blues Styles for Mountain Dulcimer

Learn how to play a shuffle rhythm, boogie in D, blues turnaround in D, scale work, a few blues strum tunes, tremolo and much more for Advanced Beg, intermediate and advanced players.

3:45 - 4:45 pm Workshop 5:  DJ Hamouris: Blues Basics on Baritone & Standard Mountain Dulcimers

The Baritone was made for the blues. The growl, the resonance and low tones we love! We’ll work through the most intuitive ways to play blues progressions in 2 keys using both barre and 7thchords. Discover the form of 12-bar blues and the easiest ever pentatonic scale patterns. AEA tuning, 1+ fret required

5:00 - 6:00 pm Workshop 6:  Bing Futch: Talkin' the Mountain Dulcimer (Playing North Mississippi Hill Country Blues)

This heavily rhythmic sub-genre of the Mississippi Delta Blues has been known to groove on one chord all night long.  Here, we dig into repeating riffs and polyrhythms using scales and patterns, while creating tension with unpredictable song structures.  Plus, we'll play the notes in between the notes, and find the soul within the song.

6:45 pm  Faculty Concert-Round Robin (live-streamed on the DulcimerCrossing Facebook page)
